Billy Ocean (O2 Academy, Bournemouth – 04/5/16) ★★★★★

The ‘Caribbean Queen’ Maestro Billy Ocean swayed into town at the O2 Academy, Bournemouth with Yolanda Brown.

Yolanda’s set piece was great, being a very talented saxophonist, but would have benefited from having backing singers, it was a great start to an even better show.

Billy Ocean has been delighting audiences for decades and despite being in his late 60’s he can still rock the rafters and putting most of us youngsters to shame, enjoying the evening as much as we did. At first I thought it was going to be a disappointment as you couldn’t hear his vocal but he soon changed that; singing songs past and present with such likes as Are You Ready, Upside Down, Pressure, Love Zone, Colour of Love, Love Really Hurts without You, Bob Marley cover No woman No Cry, to name but a few.

It was clear from the outset that Billy wanted everyone to enjoy themselves, to join in and have as much fun as possible by getting his fans up, singing and dancing along with him, squeals of delight from the ladies every time he wriggled his hips.

What a gentleman this lovely man is, even finding time in his tight schedule to hand over the reins to a fan just so  that he could propose to his girlfriend, the crowd erupted with delighted whoops of joy, (she said yes), Billy then sang the very fitting ‘Suddenly’, the newly engaged couple’s favourite song.

More well-known songs followed; Lover Boy, When the Going gets Tough the Tough get Going, Red Light, all too soon the concert was coming to an end, the encore produced Simple Game, Bill’s newest song from his new  album, then what everyone had been waiting for Caribbean Queen everyone joined in.

Going to a Billy Ocean concert is like a cool sea breeze, a perfect refresher to put you in a relaxed mood or revive your spirit back to full health, that’s exactly what he did, everyone looked happy, relaxed and refreshed.

I didn’t have a favourite part of the show as the whole of the show was great, but I did think that Caribbean Queen was the best song.

I give this concert 5 stars, it was a breath of fresh air.
