UB40 (02 Academy, Bournemouth – 21/10/16) ★★★★☆

Britain’s reggae band UB40 breezed into Boscombe’s 02 Academy to the delight of a full house. I was more than a little surprised at this; they are after all an 80’s band, the majority of the audience were in their 30’s.

The support act was a DJ, who warmed up the fans nicely with a 45 minute set piece.

UB40 introduced the band members individually, this being a nice touch, and received rapturous applause which didn’t stop throughout the show.

Their first song was Food For Thought much to my delight it was the best and my favourite. The tunes just kept on coming from old to new with the likes of Maybe Tomorrow, Come Back Darling, Cherry on Baby, Sing Our Own Song, Bring Me Your Cup, I’ll Be Your Baby Tonight, Please Don’t Make Me Cry, Midnight Rider and Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain – taken from their last album – Getting Over the Storm.

Throughout the show there was exceptional saxophone play. It was also nice to see different band members taking centre stage by singing a couple of tracks and thoroughly enjoying themselves along with the crowd. Before too long the show ended with Red Red Wine; the encore came up trumps with Don’t Break my Heart, Kingston Town and Can’t Help Falling.

The Bournemouth crowd went home with very happy faces and long lasting memories.

This gig deserves 4 stars. I like reggae music just not quite as much from this band as other bands.
